‘Dangerous’, ‘Unfit’, ‘Mental Examination’
Ultimately What is at the Core, Not Words, Matters
All of these terms are much in use now about Donald Trump. I was asked to remind others that these are the very major concerns we have raised since long ago, which brought us to founding the World Mental Health Coalition in 2017 to help educate the American public. Had our books, media appearances, and major conferences been heeded all these years, we would not be in the dire situation we are in today.
To add a personal as well as professional comment, to see such persons as George Conway and John Gartner continually plagiarizing us and personally cashing in, while never mentioning our organization, our books, our many statements, and our petitions that garnered 900+ professionals at a time all these years, or our major National Press Club conference last month, is not just infuriating. It is a tragic representation of our Zeitgeist, and the reason we cannot pull ourselves out of our current predicament. Academics or scientists who practice such repetitive and gross plagiarism without attribution are in fact chastised and thrown out (as Gartner was—not for speaking up about Donald Trump, but for unethical behavior before Trump).
These may seem like small differences, but the public is deprived when a lawyer sees the silencing of experts as an “opportunity” to advance himself as an expert after a few hours of study, as opposed to a decade or more of training and then decades of practice that go into being a specialist. He was also perfectly positioned to “authorize” other experts—as lawyers do all the time in court—where legal expertise falls short, which he has never done.
Instead, he scrupulously avoids serious professionals while allying with John Gartner, whom many reputed professionals boycott for his aggressive copying and unclinical approach. Having little proficiency of his own gives him the capacity to patch together the best analyses into perfect packages for public consumption. This may appear to have benefit, “as long as the information gets out,” but ulterior motives defeat their stated purpose: Donald Trump, too, is a charlatan capable of manifesting as anything, because he has no core (or conscience). And the public is unaware of how they are being exploited.
Yet, the core determines the eventual outcome. First, for those who seek profound understanding, superficial gimmicks bottom out and bring disillusionment. Secondly, egomaniacal needs replace true stature and substance with mediocrity (I describe how Gartner has done this in The Psychology of Trump Contagion). Thirdly, if one is caught up in the world of images, then one reinforces that world instead of lifting the public out of the present predicament—ultimately helping Trump, no matter one’s verbal opposition against what he stands for.
I apologize for the distress this newsletter would inevitably cause—but imagine the distress of having undergone it, and the distress of witnessing the public, already victimized by Donald Trump’s racketeering, be victims yet again of opportunistic pretensions, which have become part of the cause of what we are enduring today. Here is a response I gave to one reader: “Even if I offer disappointment for you now—in the others if you believe me and in me if you do not—the truth is that there are solutions, that the public deserves better, and that recognition of the truth is the first step to accessing real solutions.” A recording of our last live session is here. The videos of speeches from our recent major conference are here. The conference summary video is here. The book that was released with the conference is here. The conference website will have regular updates. Please continue to support our getting out our critical message, for, as our conference revealed, we may not survive another dangerously unfit presidency in this very dangerous world!
For over 10 years, I have been creating messages for my local community and my circles of friends that are grounded to your work. I am deeply grateful for your work, commitment, and persistence regarding the danger of Trump — the risks he is to our country and world. I have learned so much from you.
For over 10 years I’ve been writing letters to the editor to my local paper related to Donald Trump. Sometimes I directly attribute ideas and details to your work, Dr. Lee, sometimes I don’t. I want the content of my informal messages/opinions to speak to readers in a friendly nonacademic way. However when I speak to people who I believe may be open to a deeper understanding of your writing and work, I always encourage suggest reading one of your books or watching your videos.
The key thing is that the knowledge you offer is becoming common knowledge and it will not go away. Trump’s behavior and rants will continue because that’s who he is. But understanding why Trump is who he is, and the danger he embodies… that is the gift you have delivered to me and so many others. Thank you!
I feel the tension and hear the anxiety among friends and currently fellow poll greeters. I encourage all to stay active if for nothing else to lessen the worry. Each day brings us closer to November 5. Whatever the outcome, understanding how to move forward will have been strengthened by your expertise and persistence.
I often read and listen to George Conway. I have also read the appropriate portions of the DSM. I have not noticed that he delves into Trump’s personality in much depth beyond what can be found in the DSM. Your complaint needs to be more specific. I also notice that your work is relatively technical in style and content whereas Conway’s is simplified for consumption by the “average” voter.
