Finale Speech of Our Eminent National Security Panel
Former CIA Officer Ray McGovern Speaks of the Need for Mutual Security
We now reach the finale of our eminent national security panel, convening in unprecedented ways with our eminent mental health panel at the National Press Club on September 27, 2024, to discuss the most critical matter of our day: the mental unfitness of one of our presidential candidates and the danger he poses to our nation and all humankind.
Toshiyuki Mimaki was beside himself with joy when he found out that the atomic bomb survivors’ group he co-chairs, Nihon Hidankyo, had won the Nobel Peace Prize. “Never did I dream this could happen,” he said. Later, however, he pushed back tears as he portrayed children in Gaza, bleeding from their wounds. Below is an excerpt of his speech:
I thought those fighting hard for peace in Gaza would deserve it. The images of the children in Gaza covered with blood held by their parents remind me of Japan 80 years ago. [Children] lost their fathers in the war and lost their mothers with the nuclear bomb. They became orphans.
Mimaki, himself was three years old when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, faulted governments for waging wars, even as their citizens yearned for peace: “in places like Israel and Gaza, children are … living every day without food, having their schools destroyed, stations destroyed and bridges destroyed.”
The Palestinian death toll since October 7, 2023, is more than 42,000, with over 98,000 wounded and at least 10,000 still missing. According to health officials, over 60 percent of the victims are children and women.
Mimaki also pointed out that many countries seemed uninterested in seeing a world without nuclear weapons. “You hear countries making threats like, ‘We will use nuclear weapons any time,’” he said. He pointed out that, despite the United Nations’ decision that there would be five countries with nuclear weapons, more and more countries are acquiring them. He added: “The people are wishing for peace. But politicians insist on waging war, saying, ‘We won’t stop until we win.’”
Multiple Israeli ministers and officials have advocated using a nuclear bomb on Gaza and “erasing the Gaza Strip from the face of the earth.” South Africa has argued that these statements are evidence of genocidal intent in its case at the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide.
Ray McGovern is a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer, former chair of National Intelligence Estimates, and preparer of Daily Intelligence Briefs for seven U.S. presidents. He is also cofounder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity.
