Will the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists Advance the Doomsday Clock?
I am considered an expert on violence. Immediately recognizing the kinds of violence Donald Trump could possibly unleash, I spoke up as I did when he became U.S. president, as a part of my professional and civic responsibility.
Just recently we learned that Donald Trump indeed wished to demonstrate his power by using nuclear weapons against North Korea, which White House Chief of Staff General John Kelly stopped after reading our book as an “owner’s manual.” We also know that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley prevented Trump from misusing our nuclear arsenal during the last month of his presidency.

But Donald Trump is not the only impaired leader who needs to be restrained from violence of the greatest magnitude. The organization known as the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, established by Albert Einstein and others and the inheritor of the Doomsday Clock, once played a significant role in raising public awareness. Now, this institution has been—like so many others—infiltrated, some may say taken over, by “establishment interests” of the State Department, the CIA, and the military-industrial complex.
As a result, it is no longer playing its public education role as thoughtfully, forcefully, and quickly as is needed. This organization last advanced the Doomsday Clock three years ago—and by seconds rather than by minutes. Since then, it seems to have been purposefully asleep at the switch. How much more dangerous, more pregnant with catastrophic disaster, must our global predicament become, for the needle to move—and, by implication, for the world to need to change?
Will the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists move the needle, as it presents the Doomsday Clock tomorrow? Will humanity face the true extent of our own self-destructiveness, so that we can remedy it?
We have 'nuked' ourselves and allies with nuclear weapons somewhere above ten times. What I mean by this is an accidental release of a bomb from an aircraft in flight or via a crash.
In one case two x 4 MEGAton thermo nuclear devices were dropped on Goldsboro NC. 4 of the 5 safety's were triggered.

It is astonishing that we are alive. It does not deal with strongmen but sheer incompetence. Add a desperate strongman on top of incompetence and we don't have long. Our weapons have more protections than most. I would wager that DPRK, Indian and Pakistani, nukes are not protected on a scale similar to ours.
