Zoom Link—‘How do We Recover Our Democracy? Democracy as a Sign of Collective Mental Health’
Live Session Today at 12 noon EDT / 9 a.m. PDT
I am just returning from a gala that graciously bestowed me the above award, and I wish to share it with you only to explain why it is the most meaningful award I have ever received (and I have received my share, including from the National Institute of Mental Health). The theme of the event was, “What Sustains Us,” and the group granting it to me, Room: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action, is simultaneously a publication, an organization, and a community. Having formed in 2016 in response to Donald Trump’s election, it embodies the very possibilities we have been discussing: we can either choose to go along with the destruction, or we can create. The deeper we go, the more powerful we become. What we need now is not quantity of action, but the right kind; for this to happen, we need to make “room” for ourselves. In the midst of chaos and turmoil, when the world seems tumbling toward inevitable demise, we can find the center of the storm—the eye of the hurricane—where it is said to be so quiet, that one can hear a pin drop. When we perceive that all that is happening around us results from a lack of core, from which we derive our peace, our contemplation, and our studied action, then we recognize the source of all problems, as well as their solution. Please join me in our need to access our ultimate “weapon”, to save democracy and humankind.
