This is exactly right, Bandy… Thank you so much for returning to the concept of an involuntary hold, the need for which members of the World Mental Health Coalition predicted as early as 2017.

The image of a bound and gagged Biden comes from the mind of a childish man who needs to imagine himself as having unlimited power. It is a revenge fantasy intended to inflate the threatened and fragile self-esteem of TFG whose mind has been organized around such fantasies since he was a child. Dr. Justin Frank, in his 2017 book, Trump On The Couch, wrote that as a 13 year old, Donald hid large knives in his bedroom. When this was discovered, his father decided to send him to a military style boarding school to contain and restrain him. The family didn't feel safe.

The nation has been feeling unsafe for the last eight years, and in 2020 we also kicked him out of the "house." The difference is, now Donald has an army of willing executioners, people who participate in his revenge fantasies and have shown, as on 1/6, a willingness to enact the violence he imagines. His fantasies are realized by their violent behavior but at his direction. In thinly veiled verbal and graphic messages he tells them when to "stand back, and standby," and when to act because "It'll be wild." And therefore, he is the one who must be legally "bound and gagged."

Donald Trump is a danger to others and we have a right to be protected from the violence he promotes. An involuntary hold and a psychiatric examination is the protocol needed when anyone displays threatening behavior towards individuals or the community at large. That's the difference between democracies and dictatorships. Ruth Ben Ghiat, an expert on authoritarians, describes how in a dictatorship it's lawlessness that rules. In a democracy it is the lawful who are in charge. We must apply the law, like good parents setting limits, in order to assert our democratic right to have lawfulness prevail in the United States. Our hesitation further empowers Donald Trump's fantasies of unlimited power. It confirms to him and to his followers that HE has the power, not the democratic society he is threatening, symbolized by a bound and helpless President Biden. It is the law that must constrain him, to be followed up with legal consequences for not obeying the law. As a society we must be consistent, and it is consistent with our own state laws that someone who poses a danger to himself or others be held involuntarily and examined by mental health experts to see whether further containment is required.

I appreciate Nicolle Wallace on Deadline WH (MSNBC) who’s one of the most vocal ‘Duty to Warn’ journalists on TV. One afternoon last week, at the end of a segment she said and I think most people missed it, “I feel like I need a Psychiatrist” to explain … Media prioritizes lawyers who act as mental health experts. I’ve removed myself from social media because it contributes to this toxic atmosphere but also I can’t morally or ethically support platforms that are exploiting the public while enriching themselves and then supporting the right. That said, if you use social media maybe you follow well meaning journalists like NW and reach her/them that way. I’m sure it’s been done. I feel so much despair. In the same week former conservative Judge Luttig stated “we are careening” towards a “disaster”. He and Liz Cheney have both made similar statements about the Supreme Court. Before anyone advises me to take a break, I have but now is not the time. I am involved in political activities that are working towards the same goal. And, appropriately I know when and where to despair. Mostly I navigate hope, activism, and persuasion to message the importance of getting involved. ALL HANDS ON DECK is not hyperbole. Thanks for your persistence Dr. Lee.

No argument here.

Between the insanity of this post and the open threat to the sitting president, the Bloated Yam must be prosecuted and committed.

Bandi, I agree with you 100%. The problem I see is what do you do with the millions of trump devotees that have become as much a danger, as they have been infected and have adapted his mental defects into their own cultish beings?

Dr Lee - "Perhaps it is time that we apply this standard for the safety of society, rather than placing one individual above all laws, including natural law (governing mental health and disease)." Your readers (judging from the comments and 8 year history of reading everything you've written) we the people, totally agree. Please remove the word "Perhaps". Perhaps? No!!!! Just do it!!! Please, teach us how, now. The Orange Menace needs to be formally evaluated and diagnosed for the world to see. Please show us how.

"There is No Ambiguity: Donald Trump Must be Stopped" (Dr. Lee)

Whether he is stopped or not, it will take a long time for the country to come to anything we might consider healing. It took 20 years for Germans to hold the Frankfurt/Auschwitz trials where German legal institutions faced their past. Lily Gardner Feldman, a senior fellow at Johns Hopkins University’s American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, says of the German reparations and reconciliation: “If you don’t deal with the past, it’s always going to be there.”

It took a deeply religious Konrad Adenauer, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union party and the first postwar chancellor of West Germany, to start the reconciliation.

In 2020, 74 million people voted for Trump and we don't know how many will vote for him this year. No matter what happens, we have to face these people in our families and next door. Trump and Trumpism has not risen in a vacuum.

What is it about ourselves that has allowed this to happen? If America is able to survive as envisioned, how can it heal from this authoriatrian disease? Can we extricate Hitler from German society? What is it about America that pulls us to place "one individual above all laws, including natural law (governing mental health and disease)"? Are we like an alcoholic who has to hit bottom before facing our addiction?

Much can be learned by looking at how Germany coped with its past--and there is no doubt Germany needed a lot of help from those it had harmed. Until the country faces its Egoic weakness I don't see a healing way forward.

Certainly, one would expect politicians who claim belief in the Bible to communicate conciliatory and spiritual messages during occasions such as Easter and Christmas, regardless of their theological positions on such Christian festivals.

As an attorney with experience litigating with people with narcissistic personality disorder and concurrent psychopathologies, I know the gaslighting, lies, deceit, projection, and cult-like mentality of those like Mr. Trump. I have seen it firsthand, as they come to court, fully embracing their religion on their sleeves, wearing crosses, and even getting their priest to come to their aid. This happened in court, yet their priest came to their aid, testifying on their behalf all while knowing the real truth. The bottom line is, those with money want power and vice versa. And where there is money there is corruption. These people are devoid of decency and are pure evil. They will never have enough, and will go to the end of the earth to keep it, or take it from others. I now Mary Trump's story firsthand. My only hope is that the majority of the American public are not brainwashed by Trump's followers and media disciples, and will come to see the truth, and vote accordingly. Dr Bandy Lee quotes the Baker Act that identifies which people have the capacity to have an individual involuntarily sectioned - she and her colleagues, as well as a great many other people, all allegedly retain that authority. Perhaps a coalition of people from various medical and legal backgrounds could come together and have Trump involuntarily detained and psychiatrically evaluated.

It is a crime that the “Goldwater Rule” is preventing experts in predicting danger in the mentally ill who hold the world in their hands: such as POTUS candidates. The movie Oppenheimer reminds us of the magnitude of danger awaiting the entire planet by those who have access to the Nuclear arsenal. It was maddening that MSNBC host Nicole Wallace said in jest., laughing “we should have a psychiatrist on the show. Yes, you should!!

Righto! I read Synder's" On Tyranny" about 6 years ago. Am currently reading

"The Divider, Trump in the White House" 2017-2021, Peter Baker, Susan Glass, and for you a mental health professional, it may be the best of the lot. Even for me, hardly jaded, it made my hair stand on end! I think that Bandy Lee will be forced to evolve. She says that she isn't political and/but pre-trial incarceration to hopefully keep people from being killed or murdered will be not only a medical decision but also political I think. Dunno, what do you think?
