I'm so sorry for what your sister, her children, and your whole family are experiencing. I went through this in California family courts--for 12 years. My daughter's father is an attorney and it was a nightmare that bankrupted me. Child custody and divorce should not be handled in the court system. A completely new system needs to be developed that puts children's welfare above all else.

Kudos to Dr. Bandi Lee for daring to expose the “pay to play” court. Those of us in the psychiatric profession witness the perversion of justice, as she describes it, regularly. The impotence to rectify such egregious practice of injustice is a moral injury to us. We need to speak up in unison!

This is so egregious. I am so sorry to hear about your sister. I'm divorced from a narcissistic alcoholic and have spent $1000s in legal fees over the years to only end up giving him more rights to our kids. It is so unfair how the system is set up to enable the bad parent.

Back in the 80's early 90's I was dealing with the "Family court system". I left a very abusive husband, and luckily got custody of my daughter (he was a proved drug addict). He was ordered to pay me $195.00 a month in child support. After making only a few payments, he quit paying. After quite a few years, the court notified me that they were closing my case against him because they couldn't locate him. I told them I wanted the case to stay opened, (by this time he owed me close to 40K, in back support, and interest) but they went ahead and closed it anyway. He got off scott free from ever having to support his child. He did it to 2 other children that I'm aware of also. Who knows how many more he might have fathered and skipped out on. I feel bad for your sister and her children. At least my case was only about money, and I was lucky to get away alive from and insane monster.

Another backlash against simple respect in society and law for those deemed unworthy of it, i.e, women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants. The UNPROVEN THEORIES of Richard Gardner (who coined the term Parental Alienation Syndrome) target MOTHERS and cause untold suffering to CHILDREN who are forced into the total control of abusers. It sickens me, and here's a document quoting Gardner's opinions on pedophilia and incest that should enrage anyone who cares abut children: http://www.leadershipcouncil.org/1/pas/RAG.html

Right on Bandy! When the abusive parent is a lawyer, the court is biased in favor of that parent. I hope your sister keeps fighting for custody of her children - sounds like they are still being abused!

Dr Lee, i am saddened to know about injustice with your family. My general opinion about legal system is that it has become malignant for the similar reasons the other institutions have fallen. Legal system now relies on principles like Legal positivism / Originalism / Textualism etc - these things disregard concept of natural justice. The legal system is from the top down designed to protect the powerful (the corruption of SCOTUS & higher courts). Also the system is slowly being packed with incompetent judicial officers as well. For a corrupt oligarchical system, the system is tailor made to be inefficient, corrupt & incompetent - such system allows the plutocrats & oligarchs to prosper overall.

Additionally legal system is now all about big $$$. To get any justice out of this injustice system, one's only hope is giving big $$$ to high profile lawyers who play in this system. If you don't have money then you are out of luck. Middle class people get bankrupt in ordeal of this injustice system, & may still be denied justice in the end.

My idea of great reforms. We have to start with reform of Political system because everything flows downhill from that. Then we have to reform justice system, critical law enforcement & regulatory institutions. Start by applying code of ethics on SCOTUS, end lifetime tenures etc. Clean up police & FBI. Also these reforms have to go hand in hand with economic & social reforms to build a better society. A lot needs to be done.

In this critical age, Every intellectual, philosopher & thinker MUST be Political. He/she must think about political, social & economic reforms. The future of nation and planet depends on it.

The idea of exceptionalism in this country is deeply, deeply, disturbing.

A case in point is Dr Jerri Nielsen, a family doctor who lost custody of her children to her personality disordered husband and went to Antarctica for 8 mos. to provide medical care for the 40 workers there. She wrote of her experience in her book “Icebound” and was featured in People Magazine.
