I couldn’t agree more that we need education, education and more education to understand what has actually happened and why, since Trump appeared in his Emperor’s new political clothes. I joined Twitter so that I could follow Dr Lee and she really has a true gift for teaching, on top of her so many extraordinary achievements.
Some people just don’t seem able to cope, if others have different opinions to them.
Dr Lee’s work is a contributing factor in my optimism that science will prevail and societies mental health will drastically improve shortly if we heed her warnings.
The answer is education, education, education about dangerous personalities such as psychopaths, narcissists, malignant narcissists, the paranoid and some individuals with damage to the frontal lobes of the brain. Some information is out there in an easily digestible form but it's not that widely read - for example there are credible books on psychopaths ('Snakes in Suits', 'Without Conscience') and one or two fairly credible websites on the subject (e.g. lovefraud (dot) com)
By comparison there's not much credible information on narcissism. (There's also no gold standard diagnostic tool for narcissism as there is with psychopathy (the PCL-R) and even the concept is still muddled (vulnerable narcissism is a relatively new concept)). Malignant narcissism is highly credible but not to the committees that vote on the clusters of symptoms that make up a disorder, and you have to hunt around to find much information on it. Frontal lobe damage is barely mentioned by anyone. Machiavellianism, claimed not to be a disorder, is also barely mentioned in popular discourse. And there's very little on paranoia.
Many targets of psychopaths and narcissists are very aware of the pathology of Trump and his ilk, because they've seen it all before in their own lives. But they don't have the vocabulary or the broader knowledge to bring it all together. They're also not aware, for example, that the pathological (psychopathological) often wear 'ideological masks' (beliefs that they pretend to believe in in order to gain power) as well as some type of personal mask (false persona). Nor are they aware that the tricks that the pathologicals use (such as 'isolation') can be scaled up and applied to millions (e.g. border walls to keep people in, censorship, disinformation).
