The New York Times ran a break-glass editorial Sunday that demonstrates how close we are to violent internecine conflict right now. Until now I have just been watching our Trumpian malignancy grow, thinking to myself all the while that, "it can't happen here".
But the origin of that very phrase was ironic: it did in fact "happen", in Europe, WWII erupted, and Hitler killed millions of Jews. Hitler was a character very much like Trump. Viewed from a distance both are clearly sick, ridiculous, incompetent figures.
But they know how to sell their poison to a crowd. It is almost as if they cast a spell and bring out the evil that lurks inside people. They are malignant narcissists. Psychiatrist M. Scott Peck wrote that if evil could be diagnosed, evil would be malignant narcissism.
I keep thinking about the hundreds of thousands (maybe millions?) of AR-15 style assault rifles now in civilian hands . . .
Nothing less than conviction and consistent follow through will help! With Republican support and the the spread of primitive defenses to his infected base we all must be aware of the likelihood of a socially violent future. Every where we are able we must address his/their threats.
I think he will get away with it again because our society is too mentally ill already. I just read an article in the news that the female judge who will try him is already on his side and will sabotage our efforts to convict him. Nothing came of the hearings with Liz Cheney other than her being voted out of office.
“Oleaginous response”. That is a wonderful use of language. Just my opinion: There is no way to put a $ sign on the death and destruction he has been allowed to inflict. It seems our nation is largely mentally ill. Your campaign is like that of Diogenes: seeking truth in the darkness. But there IS light, and it imIS worth seeking. Thank you for all you do.

Can confirm. As a political person who merged politics with Cluster B et al a few years before trump, it was and is this very absence of mental health experts being featured in the public discourse that keeps forcing me & others to try and draw attention behind the veil of this seemingly hidden epidemic.

I hope and pray the Democratic members of the House & Senate, President Biden, Vice President Harris, their staff read your insightful comments about the troubling State of Our Country. I hope ALL Democrats read your observations and call to action. Right now, I see the Party as passive, reluctant to act, and frozen to use communication tools to grab this bull by the horns. We - and the World - will all suffer for their immobility. They are repeating the same passivity taken while Mussolini and Hitler rose to power.
Dr Lee, please contact someone from your field in India who can publish societal mental health analysis of India & its political system. Our ruling PM is a mass murderer (fits the profile of Malignant Narcissist) dictator that has dragged Indian society into abyss of intellectual & mental decline. Our past liberal politicians were weak & they did not understood the emergency of prosecuting the mass murderer Modi. The criminal cases against him dragged on for years in Indian courts while he grew stronger & stronger. Finally he became so powerful that courts became his pets, the institutions (Police, intelligence, investigation agencies etc) became his instruments & his militias unleashed terror throughout the country.
Dr Lee, indictment of Trump is a great achievement & revives hope that you can have a healthy functioning Democracy in US. Congratulations on this. We hope that fight against Trump & MAGA will be put to conclusion with their humiliating defeat. Those fighting MAGA & Trump are the true patriots.
Looking at the reaction from Republicans to the ghastly speaking indictment which was a confession on trump’s part of pissing on all Americans with such garbage treatment of our most dangerous national security intelligence, it appears our problem is societal. Our democratic malfunctions that gave him a seat in the Oval Office made the impossible, possible. But no more so than than the millions who voted for him.
The propaganda and brainwashing has to be examined. Can we require journalists to have licenses like medical professionals? We are entrusting them with our minds. Can Journalism degrees require courses in societal mental health and ethics? Are aspiring journalists even required to study how the Holocaust was able to happen? Why do people vote violent people like Hitler, Putin and Trump into powerful positions?
Yes we need to vote Democrats in and get rid of Citizen’s United and get the dark money out, but in the meantime what can we be doing differently to turn off the flood of fake and lies? AI seems like it will take us in the opposite direction?
One other thing: I am also an MD, a retired pathologist. I have spent my career studying all aspects of health and disease. Until Trump I did not know that mental illness was infectious. This is our true pandemic and while we are winning battles, worldwide I am terrified we are losing the War.
