There is an intriguing passage in “Experiences in Groups,” by W. R. Bion (1961, repr. Routledge 2010, pp. 121-122), in which he states that a group that is psychologically dependent on a leader, and is unstructured or left to its spontaneous behavior, will tend to choose its most psychologically ill member as its leader.

My comment is neither dualistic nor apocalyptic though these times do call for theological reflection. I believe we need to dust off the Barmen Declaration and remember that Jesus is Lord of All. The measure of every human system is the example of humble sacrifice and not the consolidation of wealth and power.

I believe the word is flout, not flaunt.

Isaiah 5:20, “Woe to those who say that good is bad and bad is good, Those who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness, Those who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” The rest of the chapter is instructive.

Of course you have to describe this situation in scientific and political terms, but for anyone convinced that both God and his Archenemy exist, this smells strongly of insidious influence that is beyond natural. The whole system is corrupted, which is no surprise, since God is limiting himself presently to preventing it from destroying all mankind. The rescue will not come from within, but by a new and incorruptible King. I know you know of this.
