Putin is using Nuclear blackmail to threaten Europe. It is unwise to surrender to such blackmail. China also pursues its geopolitical policy through economic policy by entrapping poor nations into unsustainable debts and then seizing control of strategic assets.
China's internal economic policy uses slave labor and this has been actively supported by western multinational corporations and Govts as it maximizes their global profits by keeping production costs down. The labor conditions in Chinese factories and labor camps is atrocious but multinational companies only care about their profits.
But coming to broader point. As someone who has been a critique of US foreign policy for all its misdeeds, i also understand that US can play a positive role in global stability. US in recent decades has done a lot of bad. But US also did a good in the past - WW2 being the prime example when US fought against Fascism. Then US rebuilt Europe through Marshall Plan and brought long standing peace and economic prosperity across transatlantic. Then US lost its way after JFK assassination and then Reagon's era (which destroyed US economy & living standards) and everything thereafter (with neocons etc).
So right now, if US withdraws from world stage, make no mistake about this. Chinese and Russians will not hesitate for one second to aggressively and militarily carve out their spheres of influence. Chinese and Russians will show same brutality & anarchy like US showed under Neocons. What is stopping China from taking over Taiwan? What is stopping Russia to takeover former USSR states? Because US acts as a countervailing force.
We are in this evil world where there are multiple centers of power who contend for control and domination. For better or for worse, we want US to also take a stand. We hope that US will act as a beacon of humanity, social, environmental and scientific progress and world peace. I just have this hope despite seeing everything US did in recent past.
