The nuclear threat has been much on my mind ever since Ukraine became a capable opponent to Putin's Russia. Putin cannot lose in this conflict. It is unthinkable. But he is losing so an escalation to a 'tactical nuke' looms larger.

Putin cannot win in this conflict, so indeed, resorting to nuclear is more plausible than before this debacle. But he if he uses nukes on its borders, he will weaken his hold on power. Additionally, those likely to take Putin out are just as authoritarian if not worse. I do not see a way that Putin comes out of this intact. Whether the planet can come out intact is another question. As a baby boomer who has had nuclear war nightmares for most of my life, I do not believe things are worse now than during the Cold War. But they could become so at the drop of a hat because we are precariously perched on the edge of destruction in most arenas of human endeavor. Which crisis to address first? How to make headway on even one of crisis points?
